In the health world, guidelines are an important tool for health professionals. Across a population, they’re used to improve the quality of care, and for individual clinicians, they’re a useful source of guidance on best practice.
The National Health and Medical Research Council commissioned Mark, and then colleagues at the University of Sydney, to write this guide.
It provided early evidence about the importance of involving consumers in the development of guidelines, and was at the forefront of the medical profession’s response to consumer demands for greater information and involvement.
Those demands, of course, have not yet been fully met.
